What Is a Commutation?

A commutation is a form of executive clemency that reduces a sentence currently being served. Governor Tony Evers has recently restored Wisconsin’s process for commuting prison sentences.

A commutation can:

  • Shorten the total prison sentence
  • Make someone eligible for release sooner
  • Convert part of a sentence to extended supervision

Governor Evers can grant a commutation, based on recommendations from the Commutation Advisory Board.

Who May Be Eligible for a Commutation?

You may be eligible if:

  • You are currently incarcerated for a Wisconsin conviction
  • You have more than one year remaining on your sentence
  • You have served at least half of your sentence (or 20 years of a life sentence)
  • You have no pending charges or warrants
  • You have had no recent violent misconduct
  • You are not serving a disqualifying offense (such as certain sex offenses)

There are also special rules for certain juvenile life sentence cases.

If you are unsure, we will walk through eligibility with you.

How We Help You Submit a Persuasive Commutation Application

Affordable, Flat-Fee Commutation Application Help

We do not simply help fill out paperwork.

We help build a persuasive, human case for release.

Our approach includes:

  • Careful review of eligibility and timing
  • Strategic development of your personal story
  • Clear presentation of rehabilitation and change
  • Organization of supporting documents and records
  • Guidance on letters from family, staff, and community members
  • Identifying what decision-makers are actually looking for
  • Preparing for the possibility of Board review

We focus on one critical question:

Why should Governor Evers take a second look at your sentence?

What the Board Is Really Looking For

The Commutation Advisory Board looks closely at:

  • The original offense and circumstances
  • Conduct while incarcerated
  • Evidence of rehabilitation and growth
  • Disciplinary history
  • Support system upon release
  • Impact on victims
  • Whether early release is justified

A strong application answers these questions clearly, honestly, and credibly.

Why This Process Matters

A commutation is often the only path to early release.

There is:

  • No guarantee
  • No shortcut
  • No automatic review

But for the right case, it can change everything.

How your story is presented can make the difference between being overlooked and being seriously considered.
